SURGEON FAQs
How much can I earn as a general surgeon?
Junior surgeons can earn between $80,000 and $150,000 per annum; meanwhile, experienced general surgeons earn from $300,000 and above. As a surgery locum, you’re looking at a daily rate of $2000 to $3500.
What qualifications do I need to practise surgery in Australia?
To work as a specialist surgeon in Australia:
If you trained in Australia, you’ll need to complete a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) before you can practice independently.
If you trained overseas — including in the UK or New Zealand — your qualifications and experience will need to be assessed by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS)
If your training is considered substantially comparable, you may be eligible for specialist registration after completing a defined period of supervised practice and meeting any other requirements.
There are 3 levels if you trained in the UK or NZ:
- Substantially comparable (usually means limited supervised practice + some requirements), or
- Partially comparable (more supervised practice and upskilling), or
- Not comparable (must do full Australian training)
Which surgery specialties offer the highest-paying jobs?
Surgical sub-specialties such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery often offer the highest salaries, particularly in private hospitals or remote locum placements. These high-paying surgery jobs can vary depending on experience, contract type, and location.
What are the 'Big Five' surgery specialties?
The ‘Big Five’ in surgery commonly refer to general surgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery and plastic surgery. These specialties form the backbone of many surgical departments and represent high-demand areas in both locum and permanent surgeon jobs across Australia.
Which types of surgery are most in demand in Australia?
General surgeon jobs remain in high demand across both public and private hospitals, especially in regional and rural areas. Orthopaedic and urology surgeons are also frequently sought for both elective procedures and emergency care. Locum opportunities in these specialties are common due to ongoing workforce shortages outside major metro centres.
How competitive is surgeon recruitment in Australia?
Surgical training and job placements in Australia are highly competitive, particularly in metro hospitals and certain sub-specialties. However, demand remains strong across rural, regional and remote areas. If you're looking for a job in surgery, working with a dedicated surgeon recruitment partner like Omega Medical can give you access to roles that may not be publicly advertised, including high-demand locum and permanent positions nationwide. At Omega Medical, we are preferred suppliers to all public hospitals as well as some private contracts.
What documents do I need to apply for surgeon jobs in Australia?
To apply for surgery jobs through Omega Medical, you need a current CV, proof of AHPRA registration, specialist qualifications (such as FRACS), references and relevant credentialing documents like police checks and immunisation records. Our surgery recruitment team will guide you through the process and help ensure your paperwork is complete for each placement.
