    JMO stands for Junior Medical Officer and is a general term covering all junior hospital doctors, including interns and residents. An RMO (Resident Medical Officer) is a doctor who has completed their intern year and is continuing hospital-based training while preparing for specialty programs.     However, to actually start working in Australia as a doctor, you must hold the appropriate registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

  • Can I locum in my home state?

    Yes - many junior doctors locum within their home state. Opportunities can range from metro hospitals to regional and rural facilities, depending on your experience level, registration, and availability.

  • Can I do locum work during study leave or between rotations?

    Yes - many junior doctors pick up locum shifts between rotations or during leave periods. Just keep in mind that study leave and external work policies can vary between hospitals and training programs, so it’s always worth checking your contract and rostering requirements first.

  • Can I do agency work as an intern?

    Junior doctors are unable to undertake agency or locum work during internship. Internship is a supervised training year completed through your employing hospital network. Once you obtain General Registration with AHPRA after internship, you can usually begin exploring junior doctor locum and agency opportunities.
