  • What qualifications do I need to work as a locum psychiatrist?

To practise psychiatry in Australia, you need a certification from the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

US-trained psychiatrists must be certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, while UK/Ireland-trained psychiatrists must be Members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

  • What does a psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a professional who specialises in diagnosing, treating and managing mental health conditions. This can include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and more complex psychiatric illnesses.

Psychiatrists are trained to evaluate the interplay between mental and physical health. As medical doctors, they can prescribe medication, provide therapy and develop tailored treatment plans for each patient.

Depending on their area of expertise, psychiatrists may work in hospitals, private clinics, community health settings or specialised mental health services.

  • Which degree is most commonly earned by a psychiatrist?

In Australia, psychiatrists begin their careers by completing a medical degree (Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine [BMed/MD]), which usually takes six years. After graduation, they undertake one year of in-hospital training, followed by a five-year specialist training program in psychiatry through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
